The Gateshead and Newcastle quayside has undergone a huge change in recent years with millions of pounds of refurbishments. In the shadow of the famous Tyne Bridge is one of the new attractions that bring thousands of visitors every year. The Gateshead Millenium Bridge is also known as “the blinking eye” because of the way it opens to let ships sail past, it looks like an eyelid blinking.
As of today for the remainder of the summer it has been announced that the bridge will open on a daily basis at noon to allow visitors and locals alike to watch the movement of the blinking eye!
Once you have experienced the bridge there is still a wealth of other things to see and do in Gateshead and Newcastle. The fantastic Baltic Centre is situated on the Gateshead quayside and offers lots of fun for the family. There are numerous things to do in Newcastle with it’s famous castle as well as the Centre for Life and many museum’s. The brand new redeveloped Eldon Square and Northumberland Street in Newcastle or Metrocentre just outside of Gateshead offer a shoppers paradise too!
For nightlife head to the world famous Bigg Market in Newcastle or one of the many other areas such as the Haymarket, quayside or the Gate which offers numerous bars, restaurant, a multiplex cinema and a big casino! Head north from Newcastle and you arrive in Northumberland, which has a fantastic coastline to rival anywhere else in the country!
